The monthly mortgage payment can be crippling. Each milestone feels more like a millstone and, for many of us, keeping up to date with the payments is a constant struggle. Worse, the amount we owe never seems to diminish and the balance feels like its set in stone.
| No wonder it’s so easy to get behind on our payments. Mortgage debt can creep up on us. When cash is thin on the ground and the creditors come calling, it’s easier to pay attention to the loudest voice – and pay off the angriest creditor. But the mortgage lender is never going to call. They’re probably not going to phone. They don’t need to raise their voice or ruffle your feathers. After all, why should they worry? They’ve got your house secured against the debt. |
We might even get away with it; for a while. Missing a few mortgage payments can seem quite liberating. Suddenly there’s a lot more cash left over at the end of the month – and there are always plenty of other bills to be paid. But, soon enough the letter will arrive, informing us that we’re in arrears with our mortgage payments. Suddenly we’re in even deeper debt. Suddenly the other debts don’t seem quite so important.
That’s the big problem with Priority Debts; there are always consequences. Unavoidable consequences. Miss a few credit card payments and we notch up a little more interest on our outstanding debt; miss a few mortgage payments and before we know it, it’s our home on the line.
Priority debts and mortgage debts should never be underestimated. Failure to fulfil your part of any obligations will incur severe penalties. So what can you do about it? Naturally, if you ever have the slightest difficulty in paying off your monthly mortgage payment, you should contact your mortgage provider immediately. As with all creditors, you should find that they’re happier to discuss solutions than arbitrarily evict you. It’s in their interest to maintain the stability. |
Make sure you keep a log of any and all conversations with your mortgage provider, and keep a record of all written correspondence too. It all helps to illustrate the ways in which you’ve tried to find a solution to the problem.
But what if it’s too late? What if the repossession order has already been issued?
It’s not too late. There is still time to negotiate; there is still time to draw up a settlement plan; there is still time to save your home. Even when it seems like you’re all out of hope, you’ll find that there are still plenty of places to turn. Not just for advice, but for practical help and real solutions to your problems that can help you reclaim your home.
Debt helpline advisors can help you put your problem in perspective. Insolvency services can help you effect a solution; usually within twenty four hours.
That’s the good news. The better news is that you can do even more to make it easier on yourself from now on. Shop around for better deals on your mortgage. Assuming you’ve ‘served your time’ with your current lender; there’s no reason why you can’t find another mortgage provider offering better rates and more favourable payment schemes.
Mortgage debt brings misery to millions, but it doesn’t have to. Make sure there’s more between you and eviction than a few failed mortgage payments…
