If you’re in debt, and you’re looking for advice; then rest assured, advice is at hand. Debt advice is now more freely available than ever before. It’s no wonder. Debt, we’re sad to say, is big business. How big? Just flick through a paper, browse online, or switch on the TV. Adverts for national debt helplines, local debt helplines, debt surgeries and debt counselling are ubiquitous. It seems everyone is talking about it; from questions in parliament, to trial by daytime TV. Which may not seem like such a good thing at first; after all, when we’re in debt, we hardly need to be reminded about it when we pick up a paper or switch on the telly!
| But at least if ‘everyone’s’ talking about it; it makes it easier for all of us to talk about it too. After all, debt isn’t the great taboo it used to be. Surely the only good thing about the debt epidemic is the sense it gives us that we’re not alone. We can talk about it freely and we can get the advice we need. It doesn’t matter what our debt problem is, or how big our debts are; there are plenty of people willing to listen and advise us; people who’ll support us, no matter what.Because UK debt is such big news, everyone wants to be seen to be doing something about it. |
That
means the government have decided to sit up, take stock and take action.
As a result, you’ll find your local council will be keener than ever
to advise you; debt surgeries and drop-in sessions are among the latest
ways in which they’re reaching out to the people! (It makes good
financial sense.) After all, there’s a clear correlation between
debt, depression and illness. The local and national economies are much
better able to cope with debt prevention and treatment than rising costs
of depression fuelled illness and absenteeism.
In other words, there is no shortage of advice available. Consequently,
if you’re in debt, deciding where to turn first can be a problem in
itself! The important thing is that whatever your most pressing debt concern
is, chances are it’s covered:
Debt getting you down? |
Not sure how to even begin to tackle your debts?
Contact a free debt helpline and start putting together a ‘same day
solution.’
Concerened about your entitlement to help and benefit?
Public funded advice bodies like the CAB can outline your rights and make
sure you’re getting your full entitlement.
That’s an important consideration in itself. Many of us aren’t receiving all the benefits that we might be entitled to, e.g. council tax benefits and tax credits. Just because we’re in debt, it doesn’t mean we surrender our rights and privileges. So check it out. Feel free to consult the Employment Service or local CAB, for free advice. They’ll be able to assess your circumstances and advise you accordingly.
Perhaps the two most important pieces of advice we can give are quite simply these: don’t panic about your debt; but don’t ignore it either. If you’re already looking for advice, then you’re already taking full responsibility for your debt. When you get the advice you need, you’ll be able to deal with your debt too, and see your way to a debt free future.
